Chicago principal warns lenient school grading won't match 'real world' expectationsNew Foto - Chicago principal warns lenient school grading won't match 'real world' expectations

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) officials are debating whether their grading policy is too lenient, with one principal arguing that leniency in grading won't translate into success in the real world for students, according to a report. "When students graduate and are working in jobs, what they experience around grace and flexibility at school is not going to match," Ellen Kennedy said in a report from the Chicago Sun-Times. "This bubble is not going to surround you wherever you go." Kennedy is principal at Richards Career Academy High School (RCAHS). 300K Nyc Public School Students Didn't Show Up To School Last Year, According To Report RCAHS is predominantly enrolled by Latino and Black students. The school piloted a new grading policy before theCOVID pandemicthat allowed them to redo assignments repeatedly and then submit assignments late. The policy was intended to addressrising absenteeismin the district. "Even if they didn't complete the assignment, the lowest score they could get was 50 rather than zero — a concept known as no-zero grading," the Times reported. Read On The Fox News App The trend of "no-zero grading" started across the district and the United States as "part of a push to give students more chances to show what they learned." Proponents of the policy argue that the traditional grading policy makes it difficult for students to recover, put in effort, and attend class. Jessica Bunzol, a transformation coach at the University ofChicagoNetwork for College Success, who has done work at RCAHS, said issuing "Fs" are "not motivators for young people." "That belief that our classroom should be oriented toward helping young people to succeed, rather than orienting them towards failure, is really a critical part," Bunzol said. "Research tells us that F's are not motivators for young people and that they're not going to engage them in classrooms in the way we might previously have thought or hoped." Us 'Report Card' Shows Students Have Fallen Behind In Reading, Barely Budged In Math: 'The News Is Not Good' A CPS official charged with managing attendance and truancy said the "shift was key in becoming a district that's attuned to the social-emotional needs of its students." "We're not issuing grades without knowing the full story," Zakieh Mohammed said. "If the student has not shown up, are we just issuing a zero, or are we asking why?" "We wanted to show up for our kids first and then grading was secondary," Candace Brahm, a science teacher at RCAHS, said. On the other hand, critics at RCAHS and another high school in CPSF "worry it allows some students to eke out passing grades with little effort and undermines the importance of turning in work on time and coming to school regularly." One student was baffled by the notion that her classmates were passing the class with high absenteeism and missing assignments while she was doing the work. Betsy Devos: Education Department Has Failed. Time To Let Parents And States Take The Lead "I was a witness to kids just coming in, like, twice a week and doing two assignments and then passing the class," Kayla Saffold said. "It was just crazy to me." "It felt like I had to put in the effort to get the A, and someone else ends up barely putting in any effort at all, and ended up passing the class. It felt unfair to me," she added. According to the Chicago-Sun Times report, educators and experts posit that the policy is leading to chronic absenteeism and increasing graduation rates. "Last year, a quarter of all high schoolers missed more than a month of school, a Chalkbeat and WBEZ analysis found. But the graduation rate has kept going up," the Times reported. CPS officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, the school district released a statement to the Chicago-Sun Times. "CPS is committed to balancing student wellbeing with academic integrity," the statement reads. "We recognize the complexity of grading and remain focused on equity — holding all students to high expectations while ensuring they have multiple opportunities to demonstrate mastery of content." "My life now looks completely different than it did before I had my surgery," Irwin told Fox News Digital at the time. Dozens injured after car plows into pedestrians during Liverpool Football Club parade. Police arrest man, rule out terrorismNew Foto - Dozens injured after car plows into pedestrians during Liverpool Football Club parade. Police arrest man, rule out terrorism

UK police have arrested a man after a car plowed into Liverpool fans during the soccer club's Premier League trophy parade on Monday evening, injuring dozens of people including four children. "The man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area," Merseyside police said in a statement, urging people not to speculate on the circumstances of the incident. A total of 27 people were taken to hospital, the head of service at North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust David Kitchin told a news conference. Two of those hospitalized – one child and one adult – had "sustained serious injuries," he said. Four people – three adults and one child – had to be removed from underneath the vehicle, according to Chief Fire Officer of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service Nick Searle, who said a further 20 people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Merseyside Police's Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims said the incident was not being treated as terrorism. She said the man arrested is believed to be the driver of the car. The local police force said they were contacted just after 6 p.m. local time (1 p.m. ET) "following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians" in the city center. The incident came as the city was filled with soccer fans attending an open-top bus parade to celebrate Liverpool Football Club's 20th top-flight league title. Video from social media appears to show the vehicle plowing into pedestrians celebrating in the street. "This gray people carrier just pulled up from the right and just rammed into all the people at the side of us … It was extremely fast. Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car," one fan, Harry Rashid, told the UK's PA Media news agency. Rashid, who attended the parade with his wife and two young daughters, said crowds of people ran over and started to smash the car's windows. "It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people … I saw people lying on the ground, people unconscious. It was horrendous. So horrendous," he said. The parade on Monday – which coincided with a separate May public holiday in the UK – involved players from the Liverpool squad being driven around the city center in an open-top bus. Hundreds of thousands of gleeful fans joined the festivities along the 10-mile route (16 kilometers) waving flags and flares of red smoke. "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling – my thoughts are with all those injured or affected," UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, thanking police and emergency services "for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident." Footage shared by Reuters news agency showed emergency services tending to people, some being carried into ambulances on stretchers. Photos from the scene also showed authorities cordoning off the heavily littered roads, with police officers investigating the area. A tent has been set up where the crash occurred. Liverpool Football Club said it is in contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident," it said on X. Everton Football Club, the local rival team to Liverpool FC, and the Premier League also offered their condolences on social media. In a subsequent post on social media, NWAS said the scene in Liverpool's city center "has now been cleared." A local hospital group has made a plea for people to refrain from calling its switchboard. "We know that many people are concerned about loved ones. Next of kin will be contacted, so please help us to manage the incident as best we can by refraining from calling our switchboard," NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group said on X. Wildfire damages Civil War-area historical site in New Mexico as campgrounds are evacuatedNew Foto - Wildfire damages Civil War-area historical site in New Mexico as campgrounds are evacuated

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Campgrounds and a horse ranch were evacuated Monday as wildfire swept through a Civil War-era historical site in southern New Mexico. Ground crews, air tankers and helicopters joined efforts to contain a blaze that damaged several buildings at the Fort Stanton Historical Site, authorities said. The wildfire scorched more than a half square mile (1.4 square kilometers) of terrain at the site and surrounding conservation lands managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management. Three Fort Stanton structures were damaged, said Laura Rabon, a spokesperson for a multi-agency team responding to the situation. It was unclear which buildings were hit by fire. An advisory from the historical site said the fire entered a former World War II internment camp. Rabon said the fire was uncontained as crews cleared lines of vegetation on the north side of the wildfire and helicopters doused smoldering hot spots with water. The blaze at Fort Stanton is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) away from communities at Ruidoso that were ravaged by wildfires last year when several hundred homes and businesses were destroyed. Those fires were followed by devastating flooding and erosion in scorched areas. Fire activity at Fort Stanton decreased amid mild high temperatures Monday of 75 degrees (24 Celsius) and 10 mph (16 kph) winds. The source of the fire was unknown, with a BLM investigator scheduled to begin work Tuesday. Horses and a family of four were evacuated Sunday from a private ranch in the vicinity, but they had been allowed to return. On Sunday, air tankers dropped fire retardant on the outskirts of the fire in efforts to slow its progress. Highway 220 was closed near Fort Stanton to ensure access for firefighting crews. Three camping areas were evacuated and closed.
